Holiday Home in the Country
This farmhouse is a Grade II listed building located in South Somerset, part of a historic agricultural setting that includes a Grade II* listed mill. The project's goal was to renovate the existing house, creating a new, open-plan kitchen, dining and living space that better accommodated the needs of a contemporary young family.
This architectural transformation sought to enhance the residence's functionality, while strengthening its integration with the surrounding landscape. The design fosters a seamless interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces by optimising the flow of natural light and harmonising with the mill's environment. Adding a new, exterior pool is a pivotal element, introducing an opportunity to promote a lifestyle linked to the natural world.
The scope of the repair work on the existing structure aimed to enhance the home's environmental performance. Insulation was added to the external walls in areas where it would not obstruct any historical features. Additionally, an air-source heat pump was installed to promote a more sustainable approach to energy efficiency.
